Exploring the abandoned mines of Lavrion is an unforgettable adventure you won’t want to miss! Strolling through those eerie, shadowy tunnels and shafts—some dating back thousands of years—might send chills down your spine, but for thrill-seekers, it’s an adrenaline-pumping thrill! Just 50 km from downtown Athens and right near the stunning ancient Temple of Poseidon at Sounio, this excursion is perfect for curious travelers eager to dive into Greece’s fascinating mining history, with a staggering total of about 300 km of underground tunnels and shafts! The earliest evidence of mining in the Lavrion area dates back to the end of the Neolithic period, around 3200 BC. By the late 6th century BC, mining boomed here, and during the 5th century BC, these mines were a major cash cow for the ancient Athenians. They were abandoned in the 1st century BC but got a second life in 1864 thanks to French and Greek companies—the most famous being the French Mining Company of Lavrion, which shut down for good in 1989. The key ores extracted from Lavrion included lead, silver, zinc, and copper.
